St Paul’s Cathedral

6 Weeks

Modern travel poster illustration based on Melbourne’s St Paul’s Cathedral. This was inspired by vintage travel posters between 1910-50s. Uniform tones of colour and a focused composition of the church building married objective information and subjective fantasy. My tonal direction from the beginning conflicted with the rational structure. With collaboration, the depth of the building was defined clearly. Before the final colours, steep contrasts between the shadows and lights on the surfaces indicated an intense light and could not convey accurate lighting. The wide number of tones was strictly reduced and the strength of light was set. A warmer blue over additional warmer tones was the solution for harmony.
